For aesthetes who have been damaged in mathematics lessons, it is not a dream subject, even if they are presented as shadow plays with acrylic glass, are integrated into sensitively differentiated compositions, and as scripturally revised computer prints recede into the background. This is exactly the approach of the artist Reinhard Hanke (born in 1951): from the salary slip to the mathematical formula in technical development, they determine our lives, every day. A transposed number has unforeseen consequences.
For Hanke, the number simultaneously represents all the inconsistencies of modern man: on the one hand, an all-encompassing science and economy with its claim to universal validity and omnipotence; on the other hand, his fears and hopes through interculturally valid symbolic content. Everywhere present and interculturally binding, she speaks a universally valid language that can be enriched, even counteracted, by everyone with their own experiences.
