In this captivating memoir, Bernard Cooper reflects on his adolescence in the suburbs, grappling with his sexuality, the consumer-oriented culture around him, and the profound loss of his older brother. As he discovers a passion for Pop art, he embarks on a journey to the California Institute of the Arts, a vibrant hub for conceptual art. There, he encounters renowned and controversial figures like Allan Kaprow and John Baldessari, as well as fellow students who push the boundaries of creativity, including one who humorously commissions a composite drawing of the Mona Lisa from the Los Angeles Police Department's Identi-Kit division.
"My Avant-Garde Education" serves as both an artist's coming-of-age story and a personal chronicle of the conceptual art movement, showcasing Cooper's talent for nuance and subtlety, as praised by David Ulin of the Los Angeles Times. This memoir captures the awe and absurdity of a transformative era in art history, revealing how the journey into artistic discovery is intertwined with the ongoing exploration of one's identity.
