Pakistan is a land of contradictions. Although it is the fifth most populous country in the world, there is a great deal of ignorance about the country, its culture, and its people. While the young nation has only existed since 1947, the region's culture stretches back many millennia. It is a truly multi-ethnic state, home not only to a multitude of different ethnic groups and languages, but also to a strong national identity that has developed in these few decades. The country's diversity stems not only from uniting such different ethnic groups as the Punjabis and Pashtuns, but also from its varied climates and landscapes: from the high mountains and glaciers in the north, through the fertile Indus Valley in the east, to the desert regions in the south and southwest. Added to this is a rich and eventful past that began as early as the Bronze Age, when the Indus Valley Civilization saw the construction of the first cities, the invention of an early form of writing, and the irrigation of the land.
