Gordon Comstock, a young and idealistic poet, works in a grimy bookstore and dreams of becoming a successful writer. However, he becomes disillusioned with the world of commercialism and consumerism, which he sees as shallow and soul-crushing. He quits his job and resolves to live a life of poverty and artistic integrity, believing that money corrupts creativity.
