Henry Gray (c.1827-1861) was a gifted anatomist whose career rose swiftly: a member of the Royal College of Surgeons by the age of 20, later a Fellow of both the Royal Society and the Royal College of Surgeons, and lecturer in anatomy at St George's Hospital in London. His life was tragically cut short at just 34 after contracting smallpox.
