When the First World War began, the suffragettes halted their campaign and joined the war effort. Pioneering suffragette doctors and life partners Flora Murray and Louisa Garrett Anderson moved to France, where they established two military hospitals despite facing strong opposition. Their remarkable medical and organizational skills led the War Ministry to invite them back to London in 1915 to set up a new military hospital in a derelict workhouse in Covent Garden's Endell Street. This 573-bed hospital was staffed entirely by women, who developed innovative techniques to treat severe mortar and gas injuries.

Over the next four years, Endell Street Hospital cared for 26,000 wounded soldiers, who often requested to be sent there because of its reputation for compassionate care. However, after the war ended and the Spanish Flu outbreak led to the hospital's closure, Flora, Louisa, and their staff were once again sidelined in the medical profession. The story of Endell Street provides a poignant glimpse into wartime London and pays tribute to the bravery and brilliance of these extraordinary women.
