The Pax Romana (Latin for "Roman Peace") is a 200-year-long period in Roman history which is identified with increased and sustained inner hegemonial peace and stability. It is traditionally dated as commencing from the accession of Augustus, founder of the empire, in 27 BC and concluding in 180 AD with the death of Marcus Aurelius, the last of the "good emperors". Historian Adrian Goldsworthy tells the story of the creation of the Empire, revealing how and why the Romans came to control so much of the world. A vast empire stretching from the Euphrates in the east to the Atlantic coast in the west. Their peace meant Roman victory and was brought about by strength and dominance rather than co-existence with neighbours.
