Descriere

"Higher Ground," written by Anke Stelling and translated by Lucy Jones, is a compelling exploration of social dynamics and personal authenticity. The protagonist, Resi, is a writer and mother who finds herself struggling against the socio-economic pressures that threaten to overwhelm her. Living in a Berlin housing co-op with her husband and children, Resi feels the acute disparity between her ideals and her reality. Her friends, also her neighbors, belong to the same co-op but occupy different socio-economic strata, highlighting the stark differences in their lifestyles and values. As Resi tries to navigate her creative aspirations, parental responsibilities, and the judgments of her peers, she becomes increasingly aware of the compromises she is making. Stelling's narrative is both raw and insightful, providing a sharp critique of middle-class pretensions and the often invisible walls that segregate people within the same community. Through Resi's internal and external conflicts, the novel delves into themes of financial insecurity, the pursuit of creative freedom, and the longing for a life that aligns more closely with one's true self. "Higher Ground" is a poignant reflection on the complexities of modern life, where personal integrity and societal expectations are frequently at odds.
